"There is nothing, absolutely nothing half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.."

HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious events in the English social calendar. The first regatta took place 160 years ago and since 1861 the reigning monarch has always consented to become its Royal patron.

Unlike multi lane international regattas, Henley still operates a knock out draw with only two boats racing in each heat. This entails the organisation of up to 100 races on some of the five days providing a; non stop programme of racing.

There is a magnificent array of Challenge Trophies, the most prized being the Grand Challenge Cup of Eights which dates from the very first year of the Regatta. 1992 saw the addition of the Temple Challenge Cup for the student Eights event and a trophy for junior quadruple sculls, the Fawley Challenge Cup.

Yet for many guests, the racing is almost incidental to the enjoyment of a day at Henley. With a stunning river bank site right opposite Temple Island, the chance to sip Pimms and savour a delicious lunch under the shade of a luxurious marquee and all the other trappings of real VIP hospitality, who can deny that Henley really encapsulates Britain at its very best.
